Edible tiger nut
Certified organic by Québec Vrai.
Also known as Tiger Nut or Chufa. A fascinating tuber that piques everyone's curiosity. It grows underground, in the roots. It is eaten dried and has a sweet, nutty flavor. One of the ancient plants cultivated in ancient Egypt.
Harvest in the autumn after the first frost, when the plant has died. Let the nuts air dry, with a fan on the first day.
The plants reach 40cm in height and 25cm in width.
Indoor sowing: Soak for 24 hours before sowing. Sow 7 weeks before the last frost.
Germination: 14 days. Temperature above 23 ° C.
Outdoor transplant: When the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed.
Exposure: Full sun.
Cultivation: Requires little maintenance; we only water them at planting time. Prefers sandy, well-drained soil. This also facilitates harvesting.
Maturity: 120 days.
Origin of the seed: We obtained the first seeds I acquired this tiger nut from an unknown seed company at the Montreal Seed Festival in 2013. Marie-Anne has preserved the seeds over the years, passing through the Outaouais and Gaspé regions. The seeds sold represent the 9th generation since I acquired them.
Open-pollinated seeds grown locally and naturally.
