Cherokee Squash North Georgia Candy Roaster
An heirloom variety developed by the Cherokee in the 1800s. This variety was nearly lost following the "Trail of Tears" forced relocation. Between 1830 and 1850, approximately 60,000 Native Americans were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the southeastern United States and relocated west of the Mississippi River. The Cherokee, one of the five affected nations, marched 1,600 kilometers, losing nearly a quarter of their population along the way to starvation, disease, or murder at the hands of settlers. This also resulted in the loss of several vegetable varieties and ancestral knowledge tied to their territory. Recently, the Cherokee Nation protected this variety through a seed bank to ensure its genetic heritage is not threatened again.
